The Challenge

Building on SDGraphical, we explored how SDG data can be made accessible and tangible for all ages and knowledge levels. The aim was to develop a physical data cockpit that would serve as a platform for exchange and engagement with visitors and partners during Vienna Design Week.

The Outcome

For Vienna Design Week 2023, we developed a spatial installation with two main gamified components: the Data Explorer and the Data Quiz challenge. Over 2,500 diagrams on more than 150 countries offered an interactive experience for all age groups. The installation was controlled by a retro-inspired console. In 2024, we expanded the exhibition format to include a transportable travelling exhibition version for the UN World Data Forum in Medellín.

The Impact

At the Design Week in Vienna, 19,000 visitors explored data interactively through a console and room-filling projection. Our observations showed that a good Data Experience makes complex data accessible to a wide audience. The visualization served as a conversation starter and promoted discussions. With simple background statistics, we tested how successfully complexity can be communicated. With these exhibitions, our SDG visualisation ecosystem grew alongside the publication and a web application. This project was honoured at the Swiss Viz Award in the category - Runnerup - and is on the shortlist for the Information is Beautiful Award.
