Out of Balance – Income Inequality

We expanded the Out of Balance poster series for the Swiss Pavilion at Vienna Design Week 2020 into a format that also engages users digitally, using our scissor diagram to make income inequality interactively tangible.

The interactive data story builds on the scissor diagram and makes income disparities between cities intuitively visible and directly comparable. Users navigate through different chapters, compare cities and time periods, and discover correlations on their own.

At Vienna Design Week, we presented the interactive data story alongside a new version of the poster. The project sparks discussion about wage inequality across professions in different world regions. The Superdot scissor diagram reveals differences intuitively – independent of time and context – and works as a transferable tool for other socially relevant questions as well.
